Son of Encouragement

Barnabas

New Testament

Barnabas — whose real name was Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus — earned his apostolic nickname from the earliest Christian community in Jerusalem. The apostles called him Barnabas, which Luke translates as "Son of Encouragement" (Acts 4:36), because of his extraordinary gift for building people up and seeing potential where others saw risk. It was Barnabas who sold a field and laid the proceeds at the apostles' feet, and it was Barnabas who would play a pivotal role in the spread of Christianity to the Gentile world.

When Saul of Tarsus — the feared persecutor of Christians — arrived in Jerusalem claiming to have been converted, the disciples were understandably terrified. It was Barnabas alone who took the risk, brought Saul to the apostles, and vouched for his conversion. Without Barnabas' courage and discernment, the greatest missionary in Christian history might never have been accepted by the Church. Later, when the church in Antioch was growing rapidly among Gentile converts, Barnabas was sent to guide the community — and he sought out Paul to help him.

Barnabas and Paul embarked on the first great missionary journey together, preaching across Cyprus and Asia Minor. Though they later parted ways over a disagreement about John Mark — whom Barnabas characteristically wanted to give a second chance — both continued their missionary work. In Catholic tradition, Barnabas is honoured as an apostle (though not one of the Twelve) and as the model of the encourager: the person whose faith in others unlocks their potential for God. His story reminds us that some of the most consequential acts in salvation history were not sermons or miracles but simple acts of trust and encouragement.
